The first day of Diwali is known as Dhanteras which commences this favourable period with many prayers and congratulations.

Dhanteras will be celebrated on Monday, October 29, 2024. What makes this festival unique is the fact that the festival celebrates the deity Yamraj, or the god of death, while also being the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari, who is worshipped as the god of Ayurveda.

Throughout this time other Devtas are worshipped, such as Lord Vinayaka, Goddess Meenakshi, Lord Anjaneya, Goddess Kali, and Lord Chitragupta. It is a kind of festival that is related to health and prosperity. On Dhanteras, people burn lamps and ask for protection from the god of death, Yamraj, not to take anybody’s life in the family. During Navratri, the Ayurvedic community imprints Lord Dhanvantari by doing rituals for health and a prosperous life.

The five-day Diwali festival is celebrated during Yam Panchak, which comprises Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Maha Diwali, Goverdhan Puja and Bhai dooj. However, this year it is observed for up to six days because duration of Amavasya. The Trayodashi tithi, which is particularly important for Dhanteras, will begin on October 29 at 10:59 AM and ends on October 30 at 1:04 PM.

For those looking to shop, the auspicious shopping time on Dhanteras will be from October 29 at 10:59 AM until 4:55 PM. This day the people buy new utensils, gold, silver, etc., to bring home the goddess of wealth, ‘Lakshmi’. All in all, Dhanteras is not only an occasion when people go to pray but also starts a new phase of life and brings new hope for life ahead before Diwali recognition.
