Shopping at Delhi markets might get less exhaustive with the new startup in the market. Rising from the frustration during shopping, long walks and hauling those shoppers home, Delhi-based startup ‘CarryMen’ takes the internet by storm.
CarryMen stems from the idea of easy physical exhaustion while shopping. A tech-enabled startup operating under the motto “You Shop, We Carry,” the company offers trained, salaried assistants to carry your shoppers whilst you explore Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, or Lajpat Nagar. Currently available in Lajpat Nagar, Carry Men offers assistance services at Rs 149 per hour.
How did Carry Men Emerge?
The service positioned as a practical shopping support rather than a luxury service, Carry Men came into existence from raw personal experiences of founders, Ritu Bhandari Srivastava and Kanishka Malhotra. “People love shopping but they hate the physical stress that comes with it,” the startup founder said on their instagram page.
The service is aimed at customers who want to continue shopping in traditional markets but without the stress of carrying multiple bags or managing small logistics through the trip.
Here is how it works
According to reports, launched in April, the start up completed over 50 bookings so far. Interestingly, the founders didn’t spend a dime of their marketing and let the internet do its job. The word of mouth recommendations and social media chatter predicts the start-up is here to stay.
A shopper can book a trained assistant for 2,3,4-hour slots. They will help you carry bags, guide through busy markets, wait in food queues, assist till parking spots or metro stations, and even help find a place to sit and relax during long outings.
Every Assistant is trained to carry upto 12 kgs, with customers required to book additional help for heavier loads. It has also introduced add-on support such as portable chairs, umbrellas, power banks and hydration assistance.
Netizens reaction
A user on X praising the job and tagging the start up said – People calling this “cheap labour exploitation” are mixing up two things. Physical work is not exploitation. Underpaid, unsafe, humiliating work is. If the assistants are paid fairly and treated with dignity, this is a legit service solving a real pain. Criticize labour terms, not labour itself.
One user jokingly asked, “Can I watch a movie with him as well,” to which another replied, “He is a helper and not bf to go on a movie date.” Some reactions were more sarcastic. “Told about this to dad and he said what ‘carrymen’, thats called a ‘husband’,” one user joked. Another harshly commented, “Modern day slavery being celebrated as an interesting business. Wow.”
