The controversial posts by Congress national spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed on X (formerly Twitter) about Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma led to backlash from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She referred to him as ‘overweight’ as well as her doubts that he could function as a sportsperson in her posts. Congress had asked her to take down the posts after criticism, and party leader Pawan Khera confirmed the fact.
Shama Mohamed said that her comments were not meant to be bodyshaming but merely general remarks on the fitness of professional athletes in defending her comments. Her point was that the sportsperson should be in top condition and she had made an opinion.
“That was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, I thought he was possibly a little overweight, and that is what I just tweeted. I have turned into a target for no reason. I put in a statement when I compared him with earlier captains. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It’s a democracy,” she told a news agency.
This came after India’s Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 15 off 17 balls in the defeat by New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday. Although India won the match by 44 runs, she criticised Sharma’s leadership and fitness.
One of her now deleted post read, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! Of course, the Captain India has never been so unimpressive!”
In another post, she contrasted him to his former Indian cricket captains, saying: “What is such a world class thing about him compared with the person he is replacing? As a mediocre captain and as a mediocre player, he has been lucky to captain India.”
