Gothenburg – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gothenburg on Sunday in the third leg of his highly anticipated tour, which comprises visits to five countries, to reinforce India’s strategic and economic ties with Sweden. Modi’s two-day stay in Sweden, which took place by an invitation from Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson, was the first by an Indian Prime Minister in the country since his groundbreaking visit in 2018 for the India-Nordic Summit.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit will be centered around future-oriented sectors. The visit will consist of broad bilateral talks by Prime Minister Modi and his Swedish counterpart on the entire gamut of ties between the two countries.

In addition to wide-ranging talks on bolstering trade and investments, advancing the green transition, and promoting cooperation in areas like AI, startups, and cutting-edge technologies, both the heads of states will discuss strategic ties in areas such as defense manufacturing, space exploration, and climate action. Relations in economic spheres have flourished with trade standing at about $7.75 billion in 2025 and over $2.8 billion of Swedish foreign direct investment in India over the past two decades.

One of the significant aspects of the visit would be when the two prime ministers together make their address at the European Round Table for Industry, which is a platform of business leaders from across Europe. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is also scheduled to attend the same event. This follows close on the heels of the signing of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, and according to the officials, this interaction will serve as a guideline for Indian and European companies to create stronger supply chains in the face of macroeconomic uncertainties.
