Imphal: In a bid to restore peace and bring back normalcy in violence-hit Manipur, the Assam Rifles, Indian Army, and Air Force along with civil administration have worked tirelessly in the past 48 hours. The Manipur government requestioned Army and Assam Riffles after inter-community clashes erupted in a few districts in the north-eastern one of seven-sisters.
Following the death of a CoBRA commando, the CRPF asked all its personnel hailing from the state and on leave in their home state to immediately report to their nearest security CRPF or BSF security camp with their family members. The official communication was made after a commando from CRPF’s Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) who was on leave was shot dead by armed assailants in his village in Manipur’s Churachandpur.
Reports from Indian Army reveal Churachandpur, KPI, Moreh, and Kakching are now under firm control with no major violence reported since yesterday. However, Imphal East and West districts witnessed sporadic incidents of arson in the past 12 hours.
The violence in Manipur is gradually abating since the deployment of Army and paramilitary who had been ordered to shoot rioters at sight. Two shopping malls have been vandalised in New Chekon and Chingmirang areas with over 9000 people shifted to safer areas after All Tribal Students Union of Manipur took out a Tribal Unity March from Churchandpur’s Torbang area on May 3.
