Junior doctors from various government hospitals across West Bengal along with masses held torch rallies ahead of the major Supreme Court hearing scheduled today. The silent protest came a day before key Supreme Court hearing on the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The torch march was organised by the West Bengal Junio Doctors’ Front- an umbrella group representing medics from various medical college hospitals in the state rallies also highlighted the need to end a threat culture in medical colleges where students reportedly face intimidation.
Earlier on Saturday, the junior doctors were intimidated that they would cease all work on Monday if they are not satisfied with the state government’s submission on their safety and security workplaces during the hearing of the RG Kar case in the Supreme Court. This decision follows an attack on three doctors and three nurses at Sagore Dutta Hospital in North 24 Parganas after a patient’s death on Friday night. Medical students at Sagore Dutta Hospital have already launched a ‘cease work’ protest in response to the assault.
“We are giving an ultimatum to the state government. If the government fails to take any positive measures to strengthen security in hospitals and gear up hospital infrastructure, we will go on a full-fledged strike again from Monday,” a junior doctor said late on Saturday night.
