New Delhi: An India bound LPG tanker reportedly crossed the strategic Strait of Hormuz earlier on Saturday. As per reports, the tanker carrying 45,000 tonnes of fuel is heading towards India to dock at Vishakapatnam.
Maritime officials confirmed the safe passage of the vessel identified as Sarv Shakti through the Strait of Hormuz. ” A Marshall Islands-flagged LPG carrier, MT Sarv Shakti (IMO No 9350599), carrying 46,313 MT of LPG (Indian cargo), with 20 crew members onboard, including 18 Indians, has safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz today, 02 May 2026, and is expected to arrive at Visakhapatnam on 13 May 2026, said official.”
The tanker moving past Iran’s Larak and Qeshm island made its way towards the Gulf of Oman as per route details released. The vessel is said to be signaling India as its destination and broadcasting its crew details, – a security measure used by vessels while navigating high tension waters.
Local reports hint, the tanker belongs to state run Indian oil Corporation although there have been no confirmations from the owners yet.
If completed, this will the first India linked LPG carrier to pass the Strait ever since US navy blockade. The bypass is considered significant from a supply security perspective, as Hormuz is the key global energy chokepoint which contributes majorly to LPG imports to India.
Currently, 13 Indian flagged vessels are stranded in the West of the Strait of Hormuz. So far 9 LPG vessels and 1 crude oil vessel is said to have successfully transit the high-risk waters ever since the war began.
