The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued nowcast warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain and strong wind for several districts which are expected for the next 2-3 hours.

A Red Warning (severe weather – take urgent action) has been issued for the Patiala district of Punjab.

The weather department has also issued Orange Warning for several districts over the country, stating that lightning with thunderstorms, wind speed of 40-60 kmph as well as moderate to heavy rainfall of 5-15 mm/hr or more will occur in these affected districts.

The alert is issued in Punjab in Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Sangrur and SAS Nagar. Amethi, Ayodhya, Barabanki, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Lucknow, Pratapgarh, Raebareli and Unnao are the beneficiaries of warnings in Uttar Pradesh.

Other districts in advisory status include Kasaragod (Kerala), Dakshin Kannada, Shivamogga and Udupi (Karnataka), Bhind, Datia, Gwalior, Morena, Sheopur Kalan and Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh), Jiribam, Kamjong, Noney, Senapati and Tamenglong (Manipur), Uttar Dinajpur (West Bengal), Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon and Wokha (Nagaland), Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli and Sivasagar (Assam), Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Kururaghatta and Faridabad (Haryana) and Pithoragarh, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi and Dehradun (Uttarakhand).

The IMD (India Meteorological Department) has advised in the affected areas to not come out, stay in the closed rooms wherever possible and it has also asked people to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and listen to all the safety instructions given by the government.
