“G20 Declaration Highlights India’s Potential as a Multilateralism Champion,” Says Amitabh Kant

New Delhi: Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, lauded the New Delhi G20 declaration adopted by world leaders, highlighting India’s capacity to champion multilateralism and unite nations on global developmental issues and conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Speaking at the annual convention of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), Kant emphasized the significance of the green development pact, a crucial element of the declaration, and its potential to position India’s automotive and components sector as a global leader in electric and sustainable mobility. He encouraged the industry to transition entirely to electric mobility.

Kant noted that the New Delhi declaration, comprising 83 paragraphs, marks the first time that all 83 paragraphs achieved unanimous consensus without reservations, brackets, or chair’s summaries. This achievement underscores India’s ability to advocate for multilateralism and unite diverse stakeholders, including developing and emerging economies, the developed world, G7 nations, Russia, and China, to reach consensus on developmental and global conflict-related matters, such as the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

The declaration places significant emphasis on climate action and climate finance, with a central focus on the green development pact, which carries profound implications for the automotive sector. Kant revealed that the negotiations centered on reducing emissions by 43 percent by 2030, signaling growing global pressure on India and other Middle East countries to curtail emissions.

India’s pivotal role in fostering consensus and advancing multilateral cooperation was underscored by the New Delhi G20 declaration, which addresses critical global challenges and sets ambitious goals for sustainable development and climate action.
