For nearly four decades now, Indian cricket stood untouched. The achievement belonged to a curly-haired teenager who stride the International cricket for India. And this record was finally broken on Saturday by a 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi who became the youngest ever player to represent India at an international level, making his T20 international debut against England.

The young star surpassed the long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days in 1989. The debut marks more than just a statistical milestone. It signals the arrival of a new fearless generation who has climbed the ranks at a pace rarely seen before. Vaibhav’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. He made his first-class debut as a 12-year-old and earned an IPL contract while he was still in his early teens and announced himself at the biggest stages with the explosive batting displays. His performance in the domestic cricket, the IPL and under-19 circuit has been spoken of, pressuring selectors that he was ready for internationals.

Here are the top youngest debutants India has recorded in history.

Sachin Tendulkar

Tendulkar made his international debut in November 1989, when he was 16 years and 205 days. Facing some fearsome attacks by Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis, who were also making their debut, the Mumbai teenager displayed remarkable composure beyond his age. Although he managed scores of 59 and 15 across his first Test, the series offered a glimpse of young batting talent redefined Indian cricket. Tendulkar finished his career with 100 international centuries and over 34,000 international runs.

Piyush Chawla

Third on the list is Piyush Chawla, who made his Test debut in 2006 at the age of 17 years and 75 days. The leg-spinner was regarded as India’s brightest and youngest bowling talents. Although his international appearances were limited, he enjoyed a successful domestic career and later became a key performer in IPL, winning multiple IPL titles.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan

Up next was the former leg spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who made his debut in 1983 at the age of 17 years and 118 days. He quickly rose to prominence with his sharp leg spin and played a crucial role in the famous Test series victory over England in 1984 and 85. While injuries and inconsistency paused his career, many believe that he could have been in international cricket for a longer time.

Parthiv Patel

Rounding up the top five is Parthiv Patel, who debuted in 2002 at the age of 17 years and 152 days during a Test series against England. Patel went on to represent India across all three formats for nearly two decades. He later established himself as one of the country’s most dependable domestic cricketers and enjoyed a successful IPL career.
