Chennai is all set to welcome an Olympic city under Rule 110, according to an announcement made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday in the state Assembly.
According to the Tamil Nadu CMO, the Olympic city will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and will feature world-class sports arenas, state-of-the-art sporting equipment, a high-performance training centre, and a dedicated sports science and sports medicine centre. Besides, the facility will also have modern infrastructure, including accommodation for sportspersons and coaches.
Under this plan, the state government aims to create an integrated sports hub to provide athletes with advanced training and support facilities to help sportspersons from Tamil Nadu conquer the Olympic Games and international sporting events.
“World-class, Olympics-standard infrastructure and training facilities with residential facilities will be built. This will help Chennai host international events and churn out Olympians,” Vijay said.
In the same announcement, the CM also mentioned a dedicated motorsports city to be established in Chennai to host Formula One races in the city.
“An Olympic city will be set up in Chennai. A motorsports city will also be set up in Chennai to host Formula 1 races. The talents of youth in motorsports will be identified, and training and racing opportunities will be provided to create national and international-level champions,” the Chief Minister said while announcing the dedicated motorsports city.
Earlier in June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports created a task force to monitor motorsports with the vision of bringing back Formula 1 racing to the country by the end of 2028.
