Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday said it was too early to confirm the involvement of any foreign hand or a Bangladeshi one in the incident while addressing the issue of communal violence in Nagpur. Fadnavis spoke to the media, saying that investigations were ongoing and he was turning over all aspects for scrutiny before deciding anything.
Nagpur receives a visit from the chief minister on Friday due to violence on March 17. However, he insisted that this could not be considered an ‘intelligence failure,’ but intelligence gathering had not been as effective as it could have been.
Fadnavis explained the chain of events, saying that the entire chain of events, along with subsequent actions, have been reviewed. Violence started following a burning of a replica of Aurangzeb’s grave in the morning, after which an FIR was also lodged. But even as the story took on the momentum of an unruly mob, there was a problem since false rumors began spreading that a verse from the Quran was inscribed on the replica. This resulted in stone pelting, arson, and clashes in the city. “We have to take it from the police that they acted swiftly to control the situation and prevent any further escalation.”
The chief minister said CCTV footage had led to arrests, and more than 100 people were already detained. “More arrests are to follow, and those who helped them will be prosecuted. And people who disseminate inflammatory content and rumors on social media will also be taken to court. Fadnavis also added that 68 such posts have been identified and taken down so far.
Additionally, he added that the rioters will be held responsible for the cost of damaged properties and in the unlikely event that it is not repaired, their properties would be seized and put on auction. Despite the unrest, he assured that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Nagpur, set to take place on September 9, is scheduled to go ahead.
