Delhi building collapse– Immediate comprehensive safety audit and structural inspection: High level officers

Seven people, including five students, died after a building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Monday, while five others remain hospitalised, three of them in critical condition, police said.

Nearly 12 people were pulled out from the rubble and rushed to hospital after the rescue operation began. The Delhi Police later released official details regarding the victims.

Following the rescue operation, a high-stakes review meeting chaired by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu was held at the LG Secretariat. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Home Minister Rafiq, the NDRF chief, the city body commissioner and the Delhi University vice chancellor.

The delegation finalised key policy and enforcement measures, ordering an immediate comprehensive safety audit and structural inspection of all private student accommodations and paying guest properties across student hubs.

Instructions have also been issued to seal illegal five-storey and old structures operating without the requisite MCD approvals.

Meanwhile, Delhi University has been instructed to fast-track plans and coordinate with civic authorities to expand official hostel capacity for outstation students.

Earlier in the day, police arrested Kumar and an associate linked to the property owner, along with the primary owner, Hariram Bansal.

Police have also taken his wife, Urmila, and son, Mahesh Bansal, into custody as part of the ongoing legal proceedings into the incident.
