Cyclone Fengal: Cyclone Fengal – pronounced ‘Feinjal’ – is likely to make a landfall this afternoon. The cyclonic storm (Cyclone Fengal) brewing in the Bay of Bengal will cross the Tamil Nadu coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram with a wind speed of 70-80 km per hour with gusts up to 90 kmph, the Indian Meteorological Department said.
Cyclone Fengal, which intensified into a cyclonic storm on November 29, is predicted to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry around midday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
On December 1, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in interior Tamil Nadu, and on December 2 and 3, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in the state.
“Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 30th November 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.2°N and longitude 81.2°E, about 150 km east of Puducherry, 140 km southeast of Chennai, 210 km northeast of Nagappattinam and 400 km north of Trincomalee. To move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during evening of 30th November”, informed India Meteorological Department on X.
The cyclone, which will bring heavy rain and strong winds, have prompted authorities in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu to close schools and colleges, stop public transport services and urging companies to allow their employees to work from home.
