The wife of a Bengaluru-based software engineer who committed suicide in December has been granted bail by the civil court on Saturday. Altogether, the court also bailed out the mother and the brother of the girl as they were also arrested under section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment of suicide. The allegations were made after the deceased techie’s brother lodged a police complaint.

The 34-year-old engineer was found lifeless in his house in Marathahalli, Bengaluru, on December 9. He wrote 24–a 24-page suicide note and recorded a 90-minute video stating that his estranged wife and her family harassed him. The allegations included being in legal cases regarding dowry harassment and demand for amounts of money. Before killing himself, the man wrote a suicide note which said that his wife wanted ₹2 lakh per month as maintenance for their minor son. First, she demanded ₹ 1 crore for maintenance expenditure, and after that, the demand rose to ₹ 3 crore.

After the techie’s death, Bengaluru police started investigating the case and arrested the deceased wife in Gurugram, Haryana. The police arrested her mother and brother from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly helping in the harassment, which led to the suicide.

The incident has once again brought into focus issues such as mental health problems, family issues, and the possibility of exploitation of the law on dowry and maintenance. The case of Avijit Roy has garnered massive public interest because the techie wrote a suicide note and recorded a video before his death.

During the period of granting bail, the court also said that they needed to clear the accusations made by the victim women further. On the other hand, the deceased’s family has called for an investigation to be conducted to permit a proper conclusion. The case seems to remain very useful in illustrating a true picture of marriage battles and the impacts they bear.
