The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on November 28 and 29, alerting residents to the possibility of a storm. According to the IMD, a low-pressure area near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will likely strengthen and develop into a storm over the Bay of Bengal by November 29. The weather agency predicts that the system will move in a west-northwest direction, transforming into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 29 before intensifying into a storm within 48 hours.
Although there are no forecasts regarding its path towards the coast or potential landfall, an orange alert was issued for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on November 28 and 29. During this period, isolated heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) and gusty winds (40 50 kmph) are expected in that region.
The update shows scattered to broken low and medium clouds with intense convection are observed over the South Andaman Sea. These developments will likely lead to moderate sea conditions over the South Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands. On November 17, a cyclonic storm named ‘Midhili’ crossed Bangladesh’s coast. Gradually lost strength, resulting in rainfall in the northeastern states of Tripura and Mizoram. In response to the storm, the Tripura government declared a holiday for all government and private schools and Anganwadi centres. The impact on air services was notable.
The ongoing weather developments highlight the importance of preparedness and monitoring as the region navigates the cyclone-prone season. It underscores the need for residents and authorities to stay vigilant and follow official weather advisories for timely and effective response measures.
