Amphan update: PM Narendra Modi to visit West Bengal and Odisha tomorrow; so far 72 dies in west bengal

India: Super Cyclone ‘Amphan’  has devastated West Bengal and Odisha before moving towards Bangladesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to pay a visit to the affected areas of West Bengal and Odisha on May 22, Friday, to check the impacts of disaster in the respective states. He has planned to conduct an aerial survey to inspect the trails of destruction and discuss various measures and rehabilitation undertaken by the authorities.

“Have been seeing visuals from West Bengal on the devastation caused by Cyclone Amphan. In this challenging hour, the entire nation stands in solidarity with West Bengal. Praying for the well-being of the people of the state. Efforts are on to ensure normalcy”, Modi tweeted.

Prior to the cyclone, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had evacuated around 1.5 lakh to ensure safety. It had deployed 37 teams to West Bengal and Odisha to safeguard the people living in the coastal areas.

“NDRF teams are working in the cyclone-affected parts. Top officials are closely monitoring the situation and also working in close coordination with the West Bengal government. No stone will be left unturned in helping the affected”, PM further added.

Mamta Banerjee has sought help from the centre. She has described the devastation as a ‘never-seen-before’ situation as the cyclone has hit the major areas of West Bengal.

“Cyclone #Amphan has left a trail of devastation beyond our thoughts. While the material damage is substantial, Bengal stands united in this time of crisis. Together we will overcome this because nothing can dampen the spirit and strength of the people of Bengal”, Mamta said.

The catastrophic cyclone has left the severe aftermath claiming 72 lives so far. The cyclone has particularly affected North and south 24 Parghanas, Mednipur, Hoogly and Kolkata.
