Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav to discuss the scandal over electoral registration in a special session of Parliament. The comments were made before the Congress is holding a ‘public impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar for conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Shah told the gathering at the Uttar Pradesh BJP State Executive Committee meeting in Lucknow that the BJP was prepared for discussion of the matter in Parliament as it had nothing to hide. He specifically thrown opposition leaders two challenges to attend a special session for discussion.
“I challenge them both here today, that the Bharatiya Janata Party is ready to sit here in Parliament and discuss this, there is no reason why it can’t arise wherever we want. Let’s call for a special sitting of the parliament,” Shah added.
The Home Minister, Arun Jaitley, in a swipe at the Opposition alleged that party engineers did not hold “rose-painted” discussions about sensitive issues in the Lok Sabha and once its proceedings were disrupted.
He also described Rahul Gandhi as being silent on the issues in Parliament and stoking mobs outside Parliament.
Congress Plans Public Impeachment Event Against CEC
The Congress had been rattling the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s stand on the SIR exercise. Its original intention had been to organise a mock Parliamentary event, but this was later changed to ‘public impeachment’.
The Congress has also seen a set back in its attempts to bring the CEC to book as the notices were also turned down in a bid to launch real action for impeachment. The party is also lacking in membership to implement it.
Meanwhile, Congress’ planned event in Delhi was postponed on Friday after it was scrapped one hour before its commencement, which was due to rain. It will now be held on Saturday.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to bring the symbolic impeachment motion forward in the event.
