Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that the Centre has decided to create five new districts in the union territory of Ladakh. On X, Shah stated that the formation of these districts is to improve the administration and to bring required facilities to the doorstep of the people across the region. He pointed out that this decision is in consonance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed Ladakh.
The new tourism get-down areas are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang. Amit Shah said that with the announcement of this program, the government is committed to augmenting the infrastructural development of local administrative facilities and providing a plethora of opportunities for the people of Ladakh. ‘To complement Narendra Modi’s goal of making Ladakh a developed region, the MHA has decided on the formation of new five districts,’ Shah added in X.
Today, the division of Ladakh is sufficed by just the Leh and Kargil districts, each of which has its autonomous district council. By the expansion, the total no of administrative districts in Ladakh will be brought up to seven in total. This is considered to be a positive extension of fundamental local governance and thus guarantees the effective administration of the central government’s developmental plans and programmes.
Earlier, Ladakh was a part of the Jammu and Kashmir state before the abrogation act by the BJP-led central government in 2019. The state was subsequently divided into two union territories: Ladakh and those areas that were introduced as Jammu and Kashmir. This was done so as to have direct control and augment growth in these areas/ territories. This is an important development to further address the socio-economic challenges faced by the people of this region, at least with the creation of these new districts.
