Bengaluru: A 28-year-old Ugandan lady was quarantined at a government-owned hospital in Bengaluru following the suspicion of having contracted the disease known as Ebola. Health officials have noted that the person is currently in good condition, and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also announced on Wednesday that there hasn’t been a single case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) detected in India thus far.
The patient arrived in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on May 23 after traveling from Uganda via Ahmedabad. Even though she didn’t exhibit any clinical symptoms at the time of her arrival, she drew attention from health surveillance teams who monitor all passengers arriving from Ebola-endemic zones due to being visibly tired.
It should be mentioned that the woman checked in at one of the local hotels in Bengaluru. However, upon exhibiting mild symptoms such as muscle pain, she was taken to an isolation ward of Epidemic Diseases Hospital in Indiranagar.
“As far as her condition is concerned, it is totally stable, and there have been no new symptoms,” Anil Kumar, the medical superintendent of the hospital, said. According to reports, samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for diagnosis.
The results are expected within the next 48 hours; however, per protocol, a retest is required after 48 hours of observation. This comes against the backdrop of a recent classification of the ongoing Ebola outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern as per the WHO. As a result, the Ministry of Health has issued screening guidelines for all entry points into the country, while the DGCA has also come up with similar measures.
