PM Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of veteran Malayalam actor Salim Kumar, saying he will also be remembered for his versatility and memorable performances.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Salim Kumar Ji. Over the course of a distinguished career, he made a mark with his versatility and memorable performances across a wide range of roles. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” Modi said in a post on X.

Kumar, a national award-winning actor, who rose from Kerala’s mimicry circuit to become one of the most versatile performers in Malayalam cinema, died at a private hospital in Kochi on Saturday night.

Salim was rushed to a private hospital on Saturday morning as he experienced health issues and was put on ventilator support by the evening. And passed away around 10:43 pm in the night, He was 56 years old.

Following his deaths tributes poured in by celebrities and political figures. Mammooty and CM VD Satheesan took to X to express their grief.

Kumar first gained recognition through mimicry and comedy before entering films in the late 1990s. Though he made his debut in 1997, it was in 2000s that his performances were recognized by the audiences. He had also won the Kerala State Film Award for the second-best actor for his work in Achanurangatha Veedu. He has been awarded several accolades in his three-decade long career.
