The long-awaited epic The Odyssey by director Christopher Nolan is grossing profusely with some of its early reviews being overwhelmingly positive, with audiences and critics alike amazed by its breathtaking visuals, immersive story and outstanding performances.
Directed by Nolan, and set to hit cinemas on July 17, it takes the ancient Greek epic of Homer, but uses a Nolan-style approach to storytelling. Although some of the images have been updated with a contemporary twist, there have been comments about its emotional impact, epic size, and technical perfection.
Social media platform X was flooded with enthusiastic reactions soon after the film’s release. The lack of speed was a luxury many fans could appreciate, though; for it was one of Nolan’s most ambitious works, and was notable for his cinematic spectacle.
One responder noted that the first half-hour is authored very slowly, but once Odysseus is on the journey, it is thrilling. The review also highlighted the film’s power to combine the elements of horror and immense big-screen fun in a satisfying conclusion.
It was described by another audience member as “one of the most immersive theatrical experiences ever made” and the Nolan was able to have the viewer experience every battle, sacrifice and moment of emotion had by his protagonist.
Matt Damon (who stars as Odysseus himself) excelled, with many people labelling it as one of his best roles.
The rest of the stellar ensemble is brought together by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron among others.
The film’s pacing and dialogue-heavy plot are complained about by some viewers, but it is generally well-received, with many viewing The Odyssey as another “visually stunning” and “emotionally compelling” addition to Christopher Nolan’s “acclaimed ouevre”.
