On July 18, 2026, the 72nd National Film Awards were announced to mark those films that have been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) during the year 2024. It was an overall success in which the Tamil film industry got phenomenal support with awards to several prestigious names like Raayan and Amaran.
Apart from the movie, Dhanush’s directorial Raayan has got the Best Tamil Movie award at National Film Awards. They were a new take at the revenge story set in a dark theme which was produced by Sun Pictures and cast by SJ Suryah, Sundeep Kishan, Dushara Vijayan and Kalidas Jayaram. Dhanush also picked up a Special Mention for acting in Captain Miller, which also emerged as the Best Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values.
Amaran went on to have a memorable night on the screens in the biographical war drama, bagging several awards at the National Awards. Rajkumar Periasamy was bestowed upon with the Best Director title and R Kalaivannan with that regarding Best Editing. GV Prakash Kumar, composer of the musical composition of the film Article 370, won his third National Film Award, the accolade is shared with Shaswat Sachdev. Amaran also featured Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, who played a role in making the film a hit, as the protagonists of the story in the film, which was about the life of an inspirational Major Mukund Varadarajan.
Other winners include Kannada film actor Ropashree Varkady who won Best Supporting Actor for Kharadi and Kannada actress Queen Devi for Dangal, and Tamil actor Sachana Namidass for Maharaja. Anal Arasu had won the award for Best Action Choreography for the same whereas sound designer Suren G won a Special Mention for the film ‘Meiyazhagan’.
The non-feature category saw TS Hari Hara Sudhan bag her hands in Best Sound Design for the documentary film Blue, thereby scoring another feather in the cap of Tamil cinema in the popular awards show.
