Ballia: Two youngsters were killed with sharp weapons at a licensed beer shop in Kotwa Narayanpur village in Ballia district, bordering Bihar, on New Year’s night. The victims, 23-year-old Prashant Gupta and 24-year-old Golu Verma were found dead after the two were involved in a clash that saw them being beaten up by a mob.

Police say the attack happened on Wednesday late at night when the two victims were in the beer shop. A quarrel degenerated into a fisticuff, and the aggressors unleashed sharper weapons, such as an axe, to hit the youths. Both the victims died of their injuries on the scene.

The atrocious incidents led to people’s demonstrations; the relatives of the deceased and the villagers put the corpses on the Ghazupil-Bharauli national highway. The protesters entreated to speed up justice and chanted anti–police slogans, blocking the major traffic and causing long lines of vehicles along both sides.

Senior ranking Police officers, including Superintendent of Police SP Omvir Singh, arrived to address the unrest. Finally, after hours of negotiations, the authorities promised to act, and the road blockage was removed at night.

“The bodies have been handed over to the respective families, and they have been asked to take them for post-mortem once they have gone through some legal formalities,” said SP Omvir Singh. According to the families’ Report, an FIR has been lodged against four named persons under appropriate sections of law. Three special teams have been constituted to arrest the accused, and investigations are ongoing.”

The police also added that they have managed to restore peace in the area. But the community is still in shock after the violent event, as people demand justice and more effective measures to prevent crimes.
