The main accused in the sensational murder of a groom in the middle of a wedding procession in Jaunpur was killed in a police encounter late Sunday night, officials confirmed on Monday.
Police said that the accused, named Ravi Yadav, was carrying a Rs one lakh reward and absconding since the shocking killing was committed on May 1. During a routine vehicle check, officers tried to stop Yadav and another man who were riding a motorcycle, Yadav said. The two refused to surrender, instead running toward a road to be built, and shooting at the officers who were chasing them.
The police said that Yadav was severely injured during retaliatory firing in self-defence, and his accomplice fled the scene. Yadav was rushed to a hospital and died while receiving treatment. One of the police officers was shot in the hand, and another managed to survive having a bullet penetrate his bulletproof coat.
Ravi Yadav was one of the main conspirators in the murder of groom Azad Bind, who was shot dead in his wedding procession, investigators said. The police accused that the conspiracy had a connection with Soni Bind and opposition to the relationship of the duo, Azad and Soni Bind. Police claimed that it was a conspiracy related to opposition to the love marriage between Azad and Soni Bind. The cousin of the bride, Pradeep Bind, and another accused, Bhole Rajbhar, allegedly assisted in planning the attack and gave the shooters the location of the groom’s stay.
A man, Azad Bind, who was working at a private company in Pune, was shot multiple times in his jaw and abdomen and passed away on the spot. This incident had garnered widespread anger throughout the state.
The incident was said to be part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s crackdown on serious crimes under the “zero tolerance” policy, and police teams are still scouring the area for the other accused in the case.
