Thane: Speaking of the recent murder in Thane district, Maharashtra, 35-year-old Abhimanyu Gupta, an addict of online gambling, allegedly killed 74-year-old Sevamary Augustin Nadar, a widow, to steal her gold ornaments from her. Subsequently, in a bid to cover his tracks, Gupta burnt the house to ashes, possibly to ensure that the evidence for his crime would not prevail. The incident was reported to have occurred in Zatewada on August 14 by the Bhiwandi taluka police.
Among them, Gupta, who is addicted to online gambling, was in a larger sum of money, up to ₹2 lakh to be exact, to his gambling. In a bid to repay his debts, he contemplated the robbery and murder of the woman. Gupta, who used to work at a dairy belonging to Nadar’s son, was aware of the house and the family. He, being a scoundrel, ambushed an old woman, Nadar, when she was all alone, cut her throat, and decamped with the gold ornaments she was wearing. To conceal his crime, he lit up the house to create an impression that it had been burned by accident.
A special police team tracked down Gupta to a lodge in Thane and arrested him on Saturday. He has been accused of the capital offense of murder and other related offenses. He has been in police detention until now and shall continue to do so until August 28.
Recalling the case of Himanshu from Uttar Pradesh, who killed his mother by suffocating her to get her life insurance money to feed his gambling addiction earlier this year. Suffering from a gambling problem, Himanshu was in ₹4 lakhs of debt, and he used the ₹500000 from insurance money to clear his dues. His actions are seen to have been provoked by desperation and the extent to which the character failed to handle his gambling responsibly.
These two cases bring out a clear danger of gambling and show how it can lead to the worst forms of crimes as people continue trying to find their way out of the related problems.
