A 26-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Ambernath after facing persistent dowry-related harassment and abuse, leading police to arrest her doctor husband and two members of his family.
Vishakha Tilkar, who had undertaken BHM and also graduated from commerce from Pune, had married BHMS doctor Nitin Tilkar on April 30 in an arranged marriage. Her family stated she wasn’t received into marriage in exchange for any bride price. Soon after the wedding, they say, Vishakha had to face much harassment from her husband, and in-laws, when they allegedly asked for 50 grams of gold from her parents.
The victim was allegedly physically and mentally harassed, investigators said. Her family members said that her husband and in-laws often asked her about her personality and asked her to not talk to others too much. It was reportedly installed with cctv inside the house and she was allegedly barred from talking to neighbours.
The violence broke out when Vishakha was allegedly attacked by police for touching a neighbouring woman to talk to, police said. The event distressed her and she is said to have told her parent about the abuse. The family was preparing to visit Pune to Ambernath to discuss the situation when they came to know of her death.
On receiving a complaint, the police officer at Shivaji Nagar registered a case and picked up Dr. Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya Tilkar and his brother. The accused were diners into the case of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide.The accused had been booked on the charges of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide.
The victim’s father is a rickshaw puller and he failed to meet the alleged demand for gold, police officials said. Law enforcement officials are still continuing in their search to fill in the details of the case presented by the family of the deceased.
