Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina: Bangladesh seems to be on edge today as a high alert has been issued in Bangladesh today. The International Crimes Tribunal will give its verdict today on the charges of mass killings (crimes against humanity case) against Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Just a day before the verdict, Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League has called for a nationwide ‘complete shutdown’ today.
Hundreds of protesters are marching towards Dhanmondi 32, which is the former residence of Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Armed police officers have intervened to stop the protesters. Here are some pictures from the scene.
The residence, which is currently abandoned, has been targeted and set on fire several times since Hasina’s ouster in August last year. Before the verdict, violent clashes, arson, road blockades and explosions took place in several districts, starting from the capital Dhaka. Due to which an atmosphere of insecurity has been created in the entire country. Bangladesh’s interim government chief Muhammad Yunus has ordered to shoot the perpetrators of violence.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina has released an emotional audio message to party workers, calling for intensification of street movements in Bangladesh. Hasina asked her party leaders and workers not to panic. The prosecution on Sunday reiterated its demand for the death penalty for Sheikh Hasina. She said, “I don’t care, Allah has given me life and one day I will die, but I am working for the people of the country and will continue to do so.” The ousted Prime Minister denied the allegations of mass killings and blamed the head of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, saying that he himself had said that they had ousted my government as part of a well-planned scheme.
