Russia conducted a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv, killing six people and injuring at least 35, including a pregnant woman. One of the largest attacks on the capital in almost three weeks had left massive holes in the residential buildings and caused blazing fires as blasts were heard throughout the whole city all night.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine stated that Russia used at least 430 drones and 18 missiles in the attack, noting that it was a calculated attack that could harm as many civilians as possible. Kyiv, Odesa in the south and Kharkiv in the northeast were subjected to particularly severe bombardment, and one of the worst-hit places is high-rise apartments.
Moscow keeps on denying the fact that it aims to attack civilians intentionally. The Russian Defence Ministry alleged the missile attack caused destruction from the overnight attacks on the military-industrial and energy infrastructure of Ukraine. However, Ukrainian officials rejected those claims by citing constant missile attacks on residential properties, government facilities, and crowded locations.
According to Zelenskyy, the air defence forces of Ukraine were able to intercept 14 missiles with the help of U.S.-made Patriot systems. The Ukrainian leader has been pleading on several occasions to the western allies to supply more hi-tech air defense systems since the winter attacks are rising on energy stations.
Otherwise unforeseen diplomatic effects also came about as a result of the strike. An Iskander missile hit the Azerbaijan Embassy in Kyiv, and in its debris, a fact that Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev termed unacceptable. Azerbaijan is a key transit route of Russian trade with Iran and other partners that constitute the Middle East.
Russian drones struck a crowded market street in Chornomorsk, a Russian region in the Odesa region, killing two and injuring 11, among them a 19-month-old girl, authorities of the region said.
Meeting in Berlin on Friday, European defence leaders once again demonstrated their support for Ukraine since the war approaches its fourth year, and there is still no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough.
