Nowgham Blast: A powerful blast took place in Jammu and Kashmir’s Nowgam on Friday night, killing at least nine people. The explosion took place when the police officers and an FSL team were inspecting the premises.

The explosion took place when the authorities were extracting samples from a large cache of nearly 2,900 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, other explosive substances, and firearms, recently seized in Faridabad. The stockpile is thought to be connected to the blast outside of Delhi’s Red Fort on Tuesday that claimed eight lives.

Eyewitnesses and CCTV clips from the area show the blast ripping through the building, before sending flames and thick smoke into the air. Hours later, Director General of J&K Police Nalin Prabhat addressed the media in the morning to avoid the spread of fake information. He listed further details of the accidental explosion inside the Nowgam Police Station and termed the blast an accidental explosion and said that any other speculation is “unnecessary”.

DGP Prabhat and the FSL team confirmed that they were taking samples of the explosives retrieved from Faridabad for the last two days when the explosion happened. “Due to the sensitive and unstable nature of the recovery, the handling was being done with extreme caution. Unfortunately, at 11.20pm, an explosion took place,” DGP Prabhat informed media.
