On Friday, India and the United States signed a historic 10-year Defence Framework Agreement to promote military collaboration and bolster their strategic relationship. The pact was signed on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh calling it the start of a “new chapter” in India–US relations.

The initiative is aimed at furthering cooperation in information sharing, technology transfer, joint operational planning, and defence innovation, demonstrating the two countries’ desire to advance interoperability and preparation for changing global conditions.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth characterised the agreement as “ambitious,” and a strategic framework for enhancing cooperation between the two militaries. He identified that the framework reaffirms America’s long-term commitment to securing a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.

This milestone comes after a hiatus in trade disputes as both countries try to move past Washington’s recent tariffs. The new defence framework is indicative of how shared security priorities are continuing to push the partnership forward and is indicative of how even as economic negotiations continue, security priorities continue to be ongoing.
