On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Japan via a telephonic call and congratulated the new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who was voted to power and reiterated India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The two leaders explained that they have a common vision to develop cooperation in such aspects as economic security, defence cooperation, and talent mobility.
Posting a description of their meeting on X (where it used to be Twitter), PM Modi added that he had enjoyed a nice chat with Sanae Takaichi, the Prime Minister of Japan. Congratulated her on getting into office and spoke about our common vision of the development of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. We concurred that the India-Japan relationship is critical to global peace, stability and prosperity.
On October 21, PM Modi had congratulated the first female Japanese Prime Minister, saying it was a historic day of her election. He focused on the fact that a stronger relationship between India and Japan is essential in the process of keeping peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
In her first speech as Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi stated that her government plans to enhance multilateral consultation with such countries as India, South Korea, the Philippines, and Australia, towards a free and open Indo-Pacific, as a long-term strategy to balance the situation in the region in the face of the increasing Chinese military influence.
During her inaugural policy speech at the Parliament of Japan, Taki enabled her to reiterated the fact that the U.S. alliance is the key to Japanese diplomatic and security policy. She also, however, emphasised the importance of establishing positive and stable relationships with China, which she referred to as an important neighbour. She promised to make Japan spend on defence more than 2 per cent of GDP by March, two years earlier than the current target, representing the new concern of Japan about national security and stability in the region.
