During the 80th anniversary celebrations of the United Nations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the challenges facing multilateralism. He expressed concern about the UN’s response to terrorism and the growing crisis facing the Global South amid current global crises.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, pointing to the growing failure of international institutions to hold perpetrators accountable, said that no example illustrates the challenges facing the UN more than the UN’s response to terrorism. “When a sitting member of the Security Council openly defends the very organization that claims responsibility for barbaric terrorist attacks like the one in Pahalgam, what impact does this have on the credibility of multilateralism?”
Jaishankar said that the UN’s response to terrorism is a prime example of the challenges it faces. He expressed concern that a permanent member of the Security Council openly defends organizations that claim responsibility for horrific terrorist attacks like the one in Pahalgam. This seriously damages the credibility of multilateralism.
He further stated that treating victims and perpetrators of terrorism as equals in the name of global strategy only makes the world more reprehensible. When individuals who declare themselves terrorists are shielded from the sanctions process, the integrity of those involved is also questioned.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said, “We must also recognize that all is not well at the United Nations. Its decision-making process neither reflects its members nor addresses global priorities. Its debates have become increasingly polarized, and its functioning is clearly stunted. The reform process itself hampers any meaningful reform. Now, financial constraints have emerged as an additional concern. How to sustain the United Nations while seeking its reconstruction is clearly a major challenge before us all.”
