Kabul, Afghanistan—The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced with profound grief the deaths of three local cricketers—identified as Kabeer, Sibghatullah, and Haroon—from the Urgun District of Paktika Province. The players were reportedly killed in an attack shortly after returning from a friendly cricket match in Sharana, the provincial capital.
The ACB confirmed that the three young cricketers were among eight people who lost their lives in the incident, which occurred during a local gathering in Urgun. Seven other individuals were also reported injured. In a statement, the board extended its deepest condolences to the victims’ families, calling the event a “great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family.”
The tragic deaths have already had ramifications for international sport. As a gesture of respect and protest, the ACB promptly announced its withdrawal from the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I series, which was scheduled for late November and included Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The players were said to be promising local talents who had travelled to Sharana for the friendly fixture. Their untimely deaths have cast a pall of sorrow over the nation, highlighting the ongoing human cost of conflict in the region, even for those involved in non-political activities like sports. Local and international cricket figures have joined the ACB in mourning the loss of the young lives.
