KATHMANDU – Nepal has been plunged into a state of deep turmoil as ‘Gen Z’ protests, initially sparked by a social media ban, escalated into widespread violence, resulting in a deadly assault on public figures and significant property damage. The unrest saw a violent mob attack former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, and led to the tragic death of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal’s wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar.

The nationwide protests, which have entered Day 2, are targeted against Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who had just returned from China and was set to travel to India later in September.

On Monday, the protesters, led by youth angry about the blocking of several social media sites, gripped the capital Kathmandu, forcing police to open fire on the crowds, which killed 19 people.

Nepal is strategically important for India and is the second country in the immediate neighbourhood to be witnessing political unrest in the last one year. In July-August 2024, a student protest was converted into a movement to topple the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was considered a pro-India leader.

Like Bangladesh, Nepal too has been witnessing diverse external forces engaged in a tug of war for political sway.
