Former all-rounder Roger Binny resigned as President of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) in a big change in the management of Indian cricket. The move is made under the constitution of the board, which prohibits the office-bearers from holding on to their positions past the age of 70. Binny assumed the presidency in October 2022 and replaced the former captain Sourav Ganguly after turning 70 on July 19.
After the resignation of Roger Binny, the incumbent Vice-President and senior board official, Rajeev Shukla, has been appointed as an interim President. Shukla, 65, has been the incumbent Vice-President of the board since 2020 and will oversee the affairs of the board at the day-to-day level until the next Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is likely in September. The AGM will make a decision on the appointment of a full-time president following the consensus of the state cricket associations.
It had been earlier reported that Binny could carry on in his position until the next board meeting because the new National Sports Bill increases the age that office-holders of national sports federations can continue in the office to 75, though this is subject to restrictions by the world governing body. Nevertheless, the age limit of 70 has been retained in the present BCCI constitution. The legal team of the board is investigating the new legislation, and any changes can not be implemented before it is reviewed.
One of the most vital players in the 1983 World Cup-winning team of India was Binny, who was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 18 wickets in the tournament. In his career, he served in various capacities in Indian cricket, such as coaching the U-19 team in 2000 to a World Cup win, being a team selector, and the head of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
As cricket will be reintroduced in the Olympics in 2028, the BCCI is set to enter into strategic debates on how to govern and where to go. Shukla is an experienced administrator and ex-member of the IPL governing council and will lead this board in this period of transition.
