New Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alerts for Kerala through August 8, as it predicted heavy rainfall across multiple states. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast a partly cloudy sky for Delhi, with a possibility of very light to light rain or thundershowers on Monday, a pattern expected to continue through August 9.

High Alert Issued Amid Rising Yamuna’s Water Level

Delhi is currently on high alert as the Yamuna River’s water level has risen to 204.14 meters, inching closer to the warning mark of 204.5 meters. This concerning escalation is primarily attributed to consistent and heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Haryana and Uttarakhand, which feed into the river system.

While the current level remains below the danger mark of 205.33 meters, officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance. The city vividly remembers the unprecedented flood of July 2023, when the Yamuna reached its highest-ever recorded level of 208.66 meters. The event led to extensive flooding across several low-lying areas of Delhi, including historic sites such as Yamuna Bazar, Rajghat, and Civil Lines, causing significant disruption and damage.

Meanwhile, the monsoon session of the Delhi Assembly will begin today. A bill related to the increase in fees of private schools is likely to be introduced in this 5-day session. During the session, the government will focus on highlighting the achievements of its 4-month tenure, while the opposition is preparing to raise the issue of demolition of slums prominently. Delhi Congress has already planned to protest outside the Assembly.
