A sad and gruesome story that has rocked the United States and brought her ever so low is when a 20 year old man in Kootenai County, Idaho shot down firefighters who came to put out a fire he had started, killing two elderly fire chiefs. Wess Roley who was the suspect was later found dead after a gun battle with the police officers.

The killing took place in Canfield Mountain which is a recreational site at the edge of the town. The firefighters arrived at the point to quench a bush fire only to be greeted with gunfire after requesting a man to move his car. Police were immediately ordered to place neighboring neighborhoods on lockdown and also began searching the hilly, smoked-filled area. The park, being all brush and trees, gave the shooter a place to hide and this caused difficulties trying to search and eliminate the threat.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said that the number of suspects was unclear, and suggested that civilians might be trapped or hurt as well on the territory. Norris said: “We are at this moment taking sniper fire.”

Three were ferried into Kootenai Health hospital. Unfortunately, two of them have died at the scene, and one was injured. The casualties have been described as Battalion Chief Frank Harwood, 42, of the Kootenai County Fire Department, who had worked there 17 long years, and Battalion Chief John Morrison, 52, of the Coeur dAlene fire department.

Idaho Governor Brad Little also lamented saying it was an ugly act of violence unlike any ever directed to firefighters. The flies of the flags at state buildings and federal buildings have been lowered till after memorial services of the victims. The reason that led to the shooting still remains a puzzle with the case still under investigations.
