Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party suffered an important political collapse, dropping from the 25 seats it gained in the 2021 election to only seven seats during the 2025 election. Because it did not win enough seats, the party now falls far below the minimum needed to keep its party status in the House of Commons.
After his defeat, Jagmeet Singh announced he would resign, bringing his seven-year term as leader to a close. He also lost his own electoral district of Burnaby Central, finishing third after Liberal Wade Chang and Conservative James Yan.
Since taking charge on March 5, acting leader Davies has requested that the Liberal Party consider the matter of party status. Steven MacKinnon, House Leader, said such a concession was almost certain to be refused, telling CBC News that granting official status to the NDP was “probably not on the table.”
According to the verified results, released Friday, a minority government was formed under Prime Minister Mark Carney, while the Liberals won 169 seats and the Conservatives came in second with 144. The return to government for the Conservatives was thanks to winning Terra Nova–The Peninsulas and just keeping the seat in Windsor–Tecumseh–Lake Shore by a small margin.
It is the 2022 supply and confidence agreement between Singh and Trudeau that the analysts feel was chiefly responsible for the party’s collapse. Because the NDP deal supported the minority government, it was unpopular with many and may have pushed some NDP voters away.
Because it has suffered a loss of both status and credibility, the NDP is now struggling to re-establish itself as important in the Canadian political scene.
