Mumbai: It was absolute ecstasy for Mumbai Indians and agony for Delhi Capitals after the end of a thrilling finale to the 2025 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). MI held their nerve on the big night at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, as they beat Delhi by eight runs to reclaim the WPL title after two years.
Mumbai players burst into wild celebrations on lifting the WPL title for the second time in history. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, named the Player of the Match for her 44-ball 66, hugged team owner Nita Ambani in a moment to cherish for Mumbai Indians. The seven World Cups Meg Lanning won, five of which were as captain, glorified Lanning’s spectacular journey for Australia. But along the way came agony, despair and heartache that one of the greatest captains in the modern era had to endure. Sunday was such a day when Lanning had to bear the brunt of finishing on the losing side after Delhi Capitals lost yet another final in the Women’s Premier League.
Life has taught Lanning the art of being humble despite being on top of the world several times. During her time away from the game in 2023, she made coffee in a cafe and did the dishes, going through the day-to-day activities of a hard-working salaried middle-class employee. Hence, despite the defeat to the Mumbai Indians at the Brabourne Stadium, Lanning won’t have her feet off the ground.
