Ludhiana: The Supreme Court will hear the contempt petition today against Punjab government for not complying with the order of the court to hospitalise farmer’s prominent leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. For the unversed, Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on an indefinite hunger strike until death for the last 37 days refusing to take any assistance on health treatments from the government. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan will hear the matter today.
Dallewal has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since November 26 to pressurize the government to accept the demands of the farmers, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after the security forces stopped the protesting farmers from marching to Delhi.
Farmers have refused to talk to the committee formed by the Supreme Court regarding their demands. Samyukt Kisan Morcha said that we will not hold any talks or compromise with the government now. In fact, the Supreme Court had formed a high-level committee in relation to the blockade on Shambhu and Khanauri borders of Punjab due to the farmers’ agitation. SKM is not a part of that movement.
Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohad said that the discussions with the government focused on the issues of the overall movement. However, he did not clarify if there has been any concrete result from these discussions.
Meanwhile, farmers have called a Maha Panchayat on 4 January at Khanauri border. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal said that he wants to give an important message to the farmers. This Maha Panchayat will be held from 11 am to 3 pm. It is being said that apart from Punjab, Haryana, farmers from other states of the country are also reaching it.
