Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has urged Joe Biden to use executive action to extend protections and work permits for immigrants who are in the United States illegally before Trump becomes president again. Earlier on Wednesday, Masto focused on Trump’s mass deportation agenda, calling on Biden to protect immigrant communities while he is in power.
Masto did target one of them, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which falls under the Department of Homeland Security. TPS grants work permits and also saves some migrants already in the U.S. from being deported. The senator also urges the continued protection against such a broader upset of the communities of immigrants.
“I remember the anxiety and hysterics during the first Trump’s term—phone calls my office received from families in danger of deportation,” Masto tweeted on X, now Twitter. “This is President Biden, and he has what it takes to safeguard immigrant families, and I am calling on him to do so.”
Masto was speaking yesterday, a day after featuring in an interview in which she emphasized the need to act fast. “These individuals are an important segment of our populations. ”President Biden can and must take legal action to extend their TPS statuses,” she stated.
The senator also stressed the importance of addressing different applications, especially the DACA program. DACA recipients are often referred to as “Dreamers” because they are immigrants without legal status in the country who arrived in the U.S. as children. “We must guarantee Dreamer’s right to remain in the only country they have ever known,” Masto said.
Though Trump’s former administration failed to reduce the TPS protections, the incoming administration is likely to restrict or eliminate the renewal procedures, putting thousands in peril. “Everybody is a potential health risk under this plan,” Masto pointed out, nonetheless emphasizing that solutions have to be sought right now before more people face legal and humanitarian catastrophes.
