In a spared effort to woo voters before the completion of the Haryana Assembly elections, leaders and representatives of the leading political parties continued holding rallies, roadshows, and nukkad sabhas all over the state up until the last day of campaigning on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The state is going to vote on Saturday.
In the last hour before the campaign silence set in at 6 p.m., Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted in X saying he was sure of the support that the BJP was receiving from the electorates after having campaigned in the state in the last couple of days. He said he expected the people to vote back the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Into power once again.
These fears both national party leaderships began escalating to the polls when rebels emerged as the possible spoilers and regional parties cutting into the vote. The BJP and Congress are in a direct fight for the majority of the 90 seats available for the contest.
Prime ministers Narendra Modi and Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh campaigned for the BJP across Haryana, while Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi campaigned for the party. A striking feature of the rallies was the support from BJP CMs such as Himanta Biswa Sarma, Pushkar Singh Dhami and Yogi Adityanath, along with Nayab Singh Saini, CM of Haryana. Rahul Gandhi also campaigned in Nuh and Mahendragarh, while NJP chief Naina Chautala took a road show in Panckula.
As a twist of fate, Dalit leader and former MP Ashok Tanwar returned to the Congress fold with Rahul Gandhi’s presence just before the elections. Tewari has earlier defected from the Congress party in 2019 to fight the Lok Sabha election for BJP against Sirsa, and joining BJP again may help Congress in convening the Dalit votes. In a highly charged environment, the two sides began to throw barbs of invectives at each other.
