In Jorabat, Assam-Meghalaya border on Friday there was a big landslide in which a huge portion of the hillside fell behind a fuel station.
A massive volume of earth, stones and debris ruptured through it and spread over the fuel station, covering almost 50% of the property. One of the videos of the event has since spread like wildfire through social media.
One of the videos from the site shows the two cars parked inside being damaged by the debris, albeit not severely.
The landslide occurred close to the busy fuel station, triggering panic among people in the area. As of yet there are no reported casualties.
Full extent of damage has not yet been ascertained. Automatic activity will include a review of the rest of the hillside, to see if the bank is still unstable and whether there is a risk of any other section moving.
There is a section of Jorabat where some of the hills have been cut for the road and other infrastructure development. Landslides have continued to be an issue in the area especially after rain.
The recent occurrence has once again come under the radar of the stability of the hill sections of the bustling Jorabat section. Authorities are keeping a watch on the area while they determine the extent of damage to the slope and surrounding area.
Officials that are on the scene are working to assess the damage in more detail and implemented measures to prevent further damage.
