In Wednesday’s sitting, the Bombay High Court raised serious alarms over the arrest death of Akshay Shinde, who was accused of sexual assault in the Badlapur case. The court condemned the Maharashtra Police, suggesting that something nefarious was going on about the case, and urged for outside interference to reveal the truth. “The moment he pulled the first trigger on the gun, the others could have ganged up and subdued him.” He wasn’t a huge man or even a man with an imposing physical presence. This is very hard to swallow. This cannot be termed as an encounter,” the court said to demand the clarification of the circumstances that led to the death of Shinde.

The deceased’s father, Anna Shinde, moved to the Bombay High Court on Tuesday, seeking to prod the Maharashtra police into admitting that his son died in a fake encounter. In his defense, he sought permission from the court to set up an SIT {Special Investigation Team} for proper investigation of the case by his lawyer, Amit Katranvare. This murder has raised political temperatures further in Maharashtra in view of assembly elections in the state due later this year.

Akshay Shinde, a 24-year-old, who used to clean a school, was arrested on August 17 after he raped two four-year-old girls in the school washroom. He was in Thane Crime Branch custody after he was arrested in another matter relating to a complaint from his former wife. As per the source, on September 23, while Shaikh was shifting from Taloja Central Jail to the Thane Crime Branch office, he reportedly fired at the police using their own weapon near Mumbra bypass and, as a result, was killed in a police encounter. This case has led to a very big issue being raised regarding police brutality and circumstances that have surrounded custodial deaths in this state; there is a need for increased policing accountability to rein in these acts.
