On Friday, junior doctors demanded to make a strong objection to Bengal’s Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari for his comments on the ongoing protest. Adhikari had stated that those who chanted ‘Go back’ to BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul during a recent protest were not junior doctors. In return, the protesting doctors were clear that the movement they were carrying out would not be abused for political gains.

This was said while West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a video claiming some of the junior doctors were_ being supplied from a BJP office, a news agency stated. Even while denying any affiliations to politics, one of the protesting doctors asserted: “We will not permit any individual to politic on our struggle. However, we looked down at Suvendu Adhikari for stating that the individuals, who chanted ‘Go Back’ at Agnimitra Paul where not junior doctors. ”

The outcry is an aftermath of the killing of a young trainee doctor aged 31 years who was allegedly raped and killed on August 9 this year in the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They have assembled themselves in front of the Swasthya Bhavan, which is the health department office of West Bengal, and they are seeking justice for their dead comrade they also want ‘Change’ in the entire health sector of the state.

Below are some key issues that the doctors, who convened a press conference outside the protest zone, expressed. They demanded the transformation of the healthcare system of West Bengal, particularly regarding the infrastructure in the hospitals and other healthcare centres available across the area. This could be explained by some of their main demands, such as the ability to stop patients from having to go long distances to seek treatment for minor ailments such as the common flu. The doctors also called on the government to adopt a better referral system requiring no people to flock to the hospitals unnecessarily, relieving the pressure of congested health facilities.
