With just two weeks left for player retention window to close, Punjab Kings have shut down talk of trading South African all-rounder Marco Jansen to Chennai Super Kings.
The rumour mill suggested PBKS could trade Jansen to CSK, but media outlets reported that PBKS sources said the franchise has no intention of releasing the left-arm pacer. The speculation came amid wider trade chatter that included Hardik Pandya, with Ravichandran Ashwin hinting that PBKS might let go of a left-arm seamer to land the Mumbai Indians captain.
The case for moving Jansen was his IPL form. In an underwhelming performance, he picked up only nine wickets in 12 matches last season, with an economy above 10 and an average over 50, and scored just 51 runs in five innings. PBKS bought him for Rs7 crore at the 2025 mega auction.
His Test form has strengthened his position. Jansen was named Player of the Series after South Africa’s three-Test series against Australia, and has climbed to No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings for both bowlers and all-rounders.
CSK’s focus is on their own purse. Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma carry a ₹14.2 crore price tag, and CSK could release Veer, enter the auction with more money and try to sign him again at a lower price. Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar is another player CSK could release to free up funds.
The retention deadline is 15 November, and the mini-auction takes place on 16 December in Goa.
The release talk is based on reports and sources, not official statements from either franchise.
