The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued fresh guidelines for the Class 9 Scheme of Studies for the 2026-27 academic session, outlining the subjects students must study and the assessment rules that will apply to them in Class 10.
According to a circular dated October 29, the revised scheme will apply to students who are currently in Class 9 and will be promoted to Class 10 in the next academic session. The changes will not apply to the existing Class 10 batch of 2026-27, which will continue under the current scheme.
The revised curriculum removes Environmental Education from the Class 10 curriculum and makes vocational education compulsory. It also outlines subject-wise board examination and internal assessment rules, with a minimum passing requirement of 33% in five core subjects.
The new scheme also introduces options for students to study Advanced Mathematics, Advanced Science or one of 22 vocational skill subjects, with examination and assessment arrangements varying according to the subjects chosen.
Students will study nine subjects, including three languages designated as R1, R2 and R3.
Students must also choose either Kaushal Vikas or one of the 22 skill subjects offered under the revised scheme. These include Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Retail, Healthcare, Banking and Insurance, Tourism, Agriculture, Design Thinking and Innovation, and Automotive.
The interdisciplinary area, which includes Individuals in Society and the Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence modules, will not be part of the curriculum for this batch.
The revised scheme is intended to provide students with additional opportunities to develop practical and vocational skills alongside their regular academic subjects. The subject choices will also determine the applicable examination and assessment arrangements in Class 10.
