The Uttarakhand government has declared October 29 a public holiday for female employees on the occasion of Karwa Chauth, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

It was decided after a request from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who called for reflecting the cultural and emotional values of the festival during the celebration of the festival by the women and families of the state.

Dhami Highlights Cultural Significance of Karwa Chauth

Dhami said in making the decision, that the festival of Karwa Chauth was a significant festival of the faith, love and trust of women in the families. He shared that the state government was tenaciously committed to safeguarding women’s interest while at the same time remaining sensitive to their sentiments, beliefs and traditions.

The Chief Minister also emphasized on the need for safeguarding the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand while keeping the development goals in mind.

Traditional festivals help to build relationships among peers and promote values like mutual trust, affection and dedication within families, Dhami said.

He said the Karwa Chauth celebrations help in upholding culture and understanding its emotional value.

Government Emphasises Women’s Interests

Respecting traditional festivals and the feelings of the women who do so, is reflected in the holiday announcement by the state government.

The government will ensure development does not take place at the cost of cultural heritage, Dhami said. He also said, festivals like the Karwa Chauth help foster love, trust and mutual commitment among the family members.

The order was passed out prior to the festival, so female employees under the government’s order may celebrate.

The event is likely to be greeted favorably by women who celebrate Karwa Chauth, a festival traditionally celebrated by married Hindu women who undertake fasting and is expected to pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.
