Delhi: Five men, accused of assaulting police officers and obstructing public servants, and who allegedly took part in an illegal assembly during the riots in the northeast Delhi in 2020 have been found guilty by a court in the city of New Delhi.
Additional Sessions Judge Parveen Singh of Karkardooma Courts passed the order on September 9, convicting Arif Malik, Mohd Khalid, Abdul Sattar, Tanveer Ali and Hunain. The quantum of sentence will be heard September 16.
The case relates to the violence that took place near petrol pump in Bhajanpura on February 24, 2020. The prosecution has submitted that the mob got away from the road divider protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), attacked policemen, vandalized the petrol pump and set it and other vehicles on fire.
The number of witnesses examined in the trial was 26 witnesses. Presenting the facts, the Special Public Prosecutor’s office had presented evidence that the violence had been witnessed by plaintive witnesses and the presence and role of the five people accused of involvement in the mob by police and the other witnesses.
And what it ruled was that a mob of about 100 to 150 had gathered together around the petrol pump with an intent to do strife, arson, criminal mischief and vandalism.
The judge also agreed that the prosecution has established that all the five accused were in the unlawful assembly all the time without reasonable doubt. The testimony of witnesses – presented before the two-year-old court, found that the young men Tanveer, Hunain, Arif Malik, Mohd Khalid and Abdul Sattar had been part of the assembly that had caused the violence.
The quantum of sentence will be considered by the court on September 16.
